If you haven’t yet experienced the famous Canopy walkway then I’m sure you’ve anticipated what this
experience would be like- the scenery, the atmosphere, the chills and the fear of standing on a series of
swaying suspension bridges, located a spine-chilling 100ft above Guyana’s forest floor.
On the forest floor, you can find the Atta Rainforest Lodge snuggled beneath the thrilling walkway, this
lodge sits in an opening deep within the Iwokrama Rainforest, which is a 3,716 square kilometers nature
reserve of central Guyana located in the heart of the Guyana Shield- one of the four last pristine tropical
rainforests in the world, found 300km from our capital city, Georgetown.
A solid 10-15 minutes’ walk along this forest trail will lead you to the famous walkway, which is over 20
years old and is over 400 meters in length. It takes one climbing a tiring 150 stairs from the forest floor
to the walkway but the view from up there is totally worth it! It’s like getting a perfect glimpse from a
bird’s eye. On my first visit to the Canopy walkway, the tour guide instructed that one person walk at a
time- I remember standing alone in the centre of one of the swaying bridges and holding on the
connecting rails. I was surrounded by nothing but greenery, it was similar to standing alone in the
middle of an ocean and realizing how small nature can make us feel. Experiencing that alone is every
reason to go back, but then I heard the birds chirping and creating nature music as the trees swayed
from left to right, IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! As a nature lover, there was nothing more satisfying than that, it
was like experiencing my own slice of heaven at the Canopy Walkway.
With every new experience, I’m often in awe of how much beauty Guyana carries beneath her, the
canopy walkway experience is a perfect way to reconnect with mother earth or to experience bird
watching or simply enjoy the unique opportunity to be in treetops. The breathtaking view that the
canopy walkway has to offer is an experience that should not be missed, the amazing flora and fauna
that can be seen on and around is astounding.
