If you’re ever looking to be educated whilst basking in some nature, then Caiman House should be your first thought!
It is said that education and ecotourism merge at this lodge- an outpost of research and hospitality located in the obscure Amerindian village of Yupukari on the Savannah lands along the banks of the Rupununi River.
This place is truly unique in its own right, what you can learn and experience at Caiman house is fascinating!
The architecture of the two-story lodge in itself is a masterpiece, it reminded me of one of those ancient buildings. All furniture in the building is handcrafted right in the village of Yupukari using locally sourced materials. Caiman House is one of those lodges that preserve both nature and
culture of the Indigenous people.
While the lodge consist of many fun activities that visitors can enjoy, the project on Caimans- where caimans are captured, weighed, measured, sexed and tagged is one of those experiences that most persons anticipate. This practice started way back in 2005 when a US researcher went to Caiman House
to do a study on Caimans, this study have since remained and persons involved continue to collect interesting information on Caimans to date.
On the other hand, another project on the preservation of turtles was initiated in 2011 by the community since turtles are a source of food in the village. Persons would use the meat and the eggs.
After there was a tremendous decrease in turtles within the community, the project on preserving turtles was established.
Caiman House is now monitoring more beaches, they have increased their hatching facilities and they are also monitoring turtle meat and eggs consumption.
I had a chance to hold hatchlings and watch them exist in their habitat where they are being protected by villagers and if there’s one thing that I can say that makes this lodge different is its beautiful combination of ecotourism and science.
Anyone who is passionate about science and nature should definitely take a trip to Caiman house to experience its many offerings.
